STAFF PICKS

Welcome to the Third Song In version of Tuesdays at the record store -- new music day! It also works for whatever new movies or books were available at your local Blockbuster or Borders (neither of which exist anymore).

Since those experiences are now few and far between, we thought having a "Staff Picks" section for each of us to recommend new releases would be helpful.

Let us know what you think!

Season 10 Picks

Tom's Staff Picks

end of the f***ing world, tv series on prime.

A 2-season British television series, based upon an American graphic novel.  Once again, Tom's kids (eventually) direct him to some cool stuff.

just like old times, single by turnpike troubadors

A respectful cover of one of Tom's favorite Todd Snider Songs.  RIP

shine for you, single by slightly stoopid, with g. love and special sauce

Tom recommends this with a shout-out to FOTS Andy Armstrong for the recommendation.  Uptempo, fun song with great percussion.

This 'ol way, album by benjamin dakota rogers

Tom recommends this 2025 album and describes it as having a "Nathaniel Rateliff feel," although a little more country and a little less soul.

The lowdown, TV show streaming on Hulu

Tom recommends this show, starring Ethan Hawke and set in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  This one is getting a lot of year-end awards attention since we recorded the episode.

A song for a new day, novel by sarah pinsker

Tom recommends this 2019 Nebula Award-winner.  An engaging sci-fi story that illustrates the love of music from the perspective of the creators and the audience.

Running man, by edgar wright

New version of the Stephen King classic that is definitely not like the Schwarzenegger version! Dropped on 11/17, so check it out.

Chris's Staff Picks

bat eaters and other names for cora zeng, novel by kylie lee baker

Award-winning 2025 sci-fi with contemporary themes and great writing.

west texas degenerate, album by treaty oak revival

New release from a band that appears to be on its way up.  Chris likes the song Misery in particular.

longleaf lo-fi, album by muscadine bloodline

A solid release from one of Chris' new favorite artists.  Keep your eye on these guys.

Desperados waiting for a train, song by andrew combs

A cover of the classic Guy Clark song with contributing vocals from one of Chris' all-time favorites, Rodney Crowell.

the world's gone wrong, song from Lucinda williams

Single and pre-release from upcoming 2026 album, World's Gone Wrong, from the incomparable Lucinda Williams.  This song features Brittney Spencer.

Dancing in the dark, single from sam mCpherson

Chris saw McPherson open for Ruston Kelly recently and loved the set.  Cool cover of the Springsteen classic.

Tracker, Season 3

Yes, this is me selling out, but I really like the Justin Hartley series, even if I can't stop thinking of him as the male stripper in Bad Moms' Christmas. The larger role of his brother, played by Jensen Ackles, is a good addition to the show.

Picks from our guests

Episode 1 guest Tim Placher recommends the documentary "Pee-Wee as Himself" streaming on HBO Max.

Add a footnote if this applies to your business
